Big Dog Tackle shop is providing a drawing for a Hooker Electric-Penn International 80 on a bent butt Swordfishing rod for our August Swordfishing seminar with Captain Bouncer Smith. You can go into the shop to pick up your ticket ($50), and we will hold the drawing at the meeting (attendance not required).

Grouper is our June species of the month. All anglers who submit fish  for the annual tournament will receive double points. There are a variety of different grouper in our area and Bahamas. Make sure you follow all rules and regulations for each specific type of grouper. Below is the link for FWC rules.

Mutton Snapper: Lutjanus analis

Appearance:

• Olive green color on back and upper sides, fading to a lighter belly
• Chevron-shaped vomerine tooth patch
• Anal fin pointed
• Dark spot on side, just above lateral line
• Blue stripe below eye, following contour of gill cover
• Red hue on fins below the lateral line

Similar Species: Lane snapper, L. synagris (rounded anal fin)

Size: Up to 30 inches (25 pounds)

Habitat:

Coastal waters near structure.

Behavior:

Spawn in July and August. Feed on fish, crustaceans, and snails.

Additional Information

State Record: 30 lb 4 oz, caught near the Dry Tortugas
